Our Pledge

The Zanzibar Collection is comprised of four, award-winning hotels and resorts that are family owned and operated. They are the pioneers of luxury travel on the South Eastern coast of Zanzibar and The Zanzibar Collection was the ?rst hospitality company to establish itself on this part of the island over 20 years’ ago. Since The Zanzibar Collection was founded, its owners have dedicated themselves to improving the lives and the environment that surround its properties, based on the three pillars of sustainable tourism: economic, social and environmental responsibility.

The Zanzibar Collection's Commitment to Social Responsibility

As a family-founded and run business we are committed to exceeding rather than meeting our social responsibility. Thus, we employ local people wherever possible and we invest generously in skills-set provision and community welfare. We're proud to divulge the fact that most of our managers have worked their way up through the ranks. Moreover, we've supported them via an innovative training programme that has ensured them a life-long career in the tourism industry. We're also devoted to the substantial support of our local community in terms of health, sanitation and educational infrastructure. Similarly, we purchase fresh produce from the local farmers and fishermen wherever possible.

We support local craftsmen and artisans in our interior design and refurbishment as well as marketing our own range of Palacina Interior Design, much of which is produced in Zanzibar. Our unwavering commitment to the use of solar power, energy-saving, minimal plastics use, organic gardening, general waste and water recycling and marine environmental protection has also ensured that our green-planet credentials are first class. Finally, as the first tourism operatives to install electricity in this area we have made a substantial contribution to its development in terms of transport, employment, income and overall infrastructure.

Welfare and CSR Responsibility

Breezes Beach Club and Spa was the ?rst hotel in The Zanzibar Collection to be built. From the outset, the Zanzibar Collection decided to employ local people to work in the hotel and to date, 90% of the workforce throughout the entire Zanzibar Collection of hotels come from the local villages – from Zanzibar and Tanzania. Employment opportunities are always o?ered ?rst to those living in the area.

The Zanzibar Collection has invested heavily in skills development and career management for their sta?, through mentoring and training. Many middle and senior managers started their careers in entry-level positions and have been given ample assistance to develop their potential and achieve their goals. The Manager at The Palms started o? as a waiter at Breezes Beach Club, Resort & Spa!

The Zanzibar Collection is heavily involved with the local community and its support has led to the building of a Maternity and Neo Natal Clinic in the local village and it also provides much needed medical supplies. The Zanzibar Collection actively encourages its guests to visit the local village of Bwejuu and discover how it supports the community through education, healthcare and clean water.

Energy Efficiency and Reduction

The Zanzibar Collection was the ?rst to bring electricity to this area of the island. Through their persistence, the introduction of electricity changed this area enormously as it allowed the developments of roads and overall infrastructure, which lead to consistent employment and income.

Baraza Resort and Spa and Breezes Beach Club and spa use solar water heating systems. This minimises the carbon footprint of The Zanzibar Collection.

The Zanzibar Collection encourages its guest to turn o? the air-conditioning when not in the bedrooms, to reduce the amount of energy usage.

The Zanzibar Collection features a state of the art sewage treatment plant, where black and grey waters are recycled and used for irrigation. All the massive gardens of Zawadi were planted using a natural product which absorbs humidity during the day and releases it into the roots at night, this allowed Zawadi to save 50% of all water needs for irrigation. In addition, to reduce the amount of water used, The Zanzibar Collection has implemented water saving initiatives, which include the reuse of linen and towels as well as the installation of low-?ow faucets and showerheads.

Target - Zero Plastic Use

As a group, we believe in the eradication of single-use plastic wherever possible and have replaced it with recyclable cardboard and paper for all our catering needs. We’re also committed to the use of glass bottles rather than plastic; whilst providing drinking-water for re-usable containers in all our units. You may also like to know that any single-use plastic containers that are still in use are immediately recycled either into plant pots or into construction materials.

Locally Sourced Decor and Interiors

Many of the artefacts and beautiful furniture that is seen in the hotels across The Zanzibar Collection are handcrafted by local craftsmen and women celebrating traditions and skills that have been passed from generation to generation. Sourcing items locally rather than from abroad, provides much-needed income to the local community. Many items are reclaimed, adhering to the policies of reduce, reuse, recycle rather than purchasing new.

Sustainable Food Options

Where ever possible The Zanzibar Collection sources its menu items direct from local suppliers; this aids the local economy. The organic garden at Zawadi Hotel provides this property with a range of fresh fruits and vegetables and the ?sh served is always purchased from local ?shermen.

By eating locally and seasonally, the fruits and vegetables served in the hotels are diverse. This also reduces air miles on some items. By using local produce, this has led to a to more sustainable and healthier o?ering to its guests and creates opportunities for them to experience a greater connection to the area through the provision of local dishes.

In addition, the use of locally sourced produce means it is often organic and hasn't been treated with pesticides or hormones, which provides guests of the Zanzibar Collection with healthier food selections.

Sustainable Sanitation

We have invested in our own state-of-the-art sewage-treatment plant, which turns both black and grey water into irrigation water.

We plant only indigenous species in our grounds, and they are chosen for their ability to absorb humidity during the day and release it into the roots at night – thus delivering a 50% reduction in uptake of precious water. We also adhere to a stringent policy of laundry/bathroom water-use minimization.

Activities with a Conscience

Guests are encouraged to take part in educational tours to discover the coral reefs in the area and see ?rst-hand the diverse ecosystems that exist.

The local culture is important and provides guests with an understanding of the area. The Zanzibar Collection encourages guests to experience the diverse past of Zanzibar and can arrange tours to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town, as well as on-site Swahili cookery classes and the art of palm weaving. Tours to the Jozani Forest, home of the rare red colobus monkey can be organised, in small intimate groups. All of these activities contribute to the local economy and provide much-needed funds to preserve and protect these areas whilst educating guests at the same time. The Children’s Program includes Swahili classes and reef walks and talks with our Marine Biologist.

Marine Conservation Program

The Zanzibar Collection employs a marine biologist specialised in conservation and tidal ecosystem, there is an educational program for all the sta? members, in order to sensitize them to the importance of the ocean as a resource and how to manage it. The guests as well are welcome to join the program, they go on reef walks and are taught about the delicate balance of the tidal lagoon ecosystem.

Snorkelling the nearby reefs provide guests with invaluable insight and education into the diverse array of marine life that can be seen. By taking guests on snorkelling safaris, they can see ?rst-hand, the assortment of aquatic life and the need to protect and preserve the oceans.

Frangipani Spas

Both Frangipani Spas at Breezes Beach Club and Spa and Baraza Resort & Spa use products that are native to the area, rather than commercially produced. This not only provides guests with a greater connection to Zanzibar itself, but also guests bene?t from products that are hand-made and free of parabens, which are overall kinder to the environment and the skin.

Commitment Going Forwards

The Zanzibar Collection has successfully built a family owned and operated organisation which is founded on the basis of providing a conscious commitment to social, economic and environmental responsibility. It has proven that luxury, executed with a conscience, can have an immensely positive impact and will continue to develop its policies to ensure the protection and preservation of our planet.

Green, The Colour of Our Interior Design

The distinctive art and furniture that so define our style are hand-made by local artisans. In this way we both celebrate and preserve the nation's heritage for future generations whilst providing an invaluable income for our local community. We also excel in creating our distinctive 'look' whilst also using upcycled locally sourced/reclaimed materials.

Conscious Consumption

Our chefs and managers purchase locally wherever feasible. In this way they support a wide range of local farmers, fishermen and artisans. Similarly, they insist on buying only seasonally and organically grown produce. Wherever possible, our menus reflect the authentic heritage of the region while our methods preserve local skills and customs. All our menus are planned with the reduction of airmiles in mind; and according to the most stringent nutritional standards.

Eco-Clever Leisure Activities

When it comes to leisure activities, we ensure that they accord with the principals of social responsibility and environmental protection. We are also dedicated to the preservation of the ancient heritage of the island by means of our classes in cookery, palm-weaving, Swahili and Bao. Our guest library also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the archipelago while our policy of support to local villages promotes their development.

Caring Marine Consideration

Our dedicated marine biologist ensures the well-being of our tidal ecosystem. We also provide educational workshops for all our staff (which our guests are welcome to join). Similarly, we promote such ecologically-sound pursuits as reef walks, diving and snorkeling.

Family Holidays and Happy Children

We are delighted to present a family-friendly environment as well as a wide range of 'edutainment'. We can offer baby cots/chairs, additional beds for children, children’s mealtimes and leisure options to include: guided reef walks, children's watersports, beach volleyball, sandcastle-building, Swahili lessons, cookery workshops, palm-weaving and palm-tree climbing for kids plus tours of the Jozani Forest, Stone Town and the Spice Plantations. We also invite our families to learn to kite surf, kayak, windsurf and dive… or simply go for a bike ride. We also provide family-oriented visits to the local village and school.

Our Spas

Our Frangipani Spas are run to the same ecologically impeccable lines as are every other aspect of our hotels. Our scrubs and body treatments are hand-made and use locally produced coconuts, fruits spices and fragrances. All our treatments are free of harmful chemicals.

A Future That Cares for The Planet

We have built a thriving business on the basis of a deeply held commitment to the tenets of social, economic and environmental responsibility. We believe that 'luxury with a conscience' works. It also promotes the longevity of our planet and the well-being of our people alike. Meanwhile, throughout our future, we will remain dedicated to the adoption of only environmentally- and community-supportive polices and implementations.
